English & Communications Accomplishments
Updated: 11/23/19
In the past two and a half years, the E/C department has accomplished the following:
A new major, B.A in Communications, with a Digital Media Innovation Concentration, was approved by the BHE and will makes its debut in Fall 2019. Ten students have already signed up with some as dual majors with B.A. English.
To accompany the new major in the fall, a new minor in American Ethnic Studies minor will also make its fall appearance. It also is attracting good numbers.
Two new faculty were hired with two more approved for Fall 2020.
In Fall 2019, the new E & C Student Media Center, located in MH 109, will be operational. Students will have access to AVID computing. In addition, for the first time Film concentrators will have a dedicated space to work in. An open house is being organized for fall.
The entire E & C faculty, though not engineers, wrote and submitted an extensive narrative to support the College’s grant application for DCAMM funding to renovate Mark Hopkins.
Though the grant was not awarded, Mark Hopkins 110 has been since renovated into a student lounge where the E & C 24/7 student food share program is house.
A new wide screen TV featuring department announcement, Beacon Web News, and other programming is available daily in the student area on the first floor across from the stairwell to the TV studio. That studio’s Green Room has been renovated to accommodate more tours in the area.
Other accomplishments during the time period include:
A new $20 000 copier was approved for department use.
All office suites were equipped with a fridge and microwave
The entire interior of the building was painted, and new signage was displayed.
Approved by All College’s, the department new name is now English & Communications.
Launched a department-approved new faculty mentoring program employed successfully in Fall 2018 and 2019. We are first department to create such a policy.
Updated the department’s faculty search policy with two successful hires as a result.
Revised the E & C curriculum deleting 20 courses no longer being taught.
Supported numerous Orientations, Open Houses, and Accepted Student Days. The department, as it has for years, is a top recruiter of new students.
Most of this success was achieved during work to rule.
Respectfully submitted by Dr. Paul E. LeSage, E & C chair
